NESS  MELODEON BAND

CÒMHLAN MAILEÒIDIAN NIS

’S e buidheann de chluicheadairean maileòidian èasgaidh a th’ ann an Còmhlan Maileòidian Nis stèidhichte ann an Nis fhèin ann am fìor Cheann a Tuath Leòdhais. Tha am buidheann air a bhith

a’ cruinneachadh gach Diardaoin anns an ionad ciùil Taigh Dhonnchaidh bho thàinig iad còmhla an toiseach ann an 2000. Bha an àireamh de dhaoine a bha a’ cluich a’ mhaileòidian anns an stoidhle traidiseanta air a bhith a’ crìonadh, agus airson an adhbhar sin, chaidh buidheann a chruthachadh airson an seann stoidhle cluiche a chumail a’ dol. Thòisich iad gu math neo-fhoirmeil,  a’ coinneachadh dìreach airson port no dhà, cupan teatha agus beagan còmhraidh. Ann an co-bhonn ri Taigh Dhonnchaidh, thòisich cuid de na buill a’ teagasg òigridh na sgìre agus tha faisg air fichead pàiste ag ionnsachadh a’ mhaileòidian an-dràsta.

Ness Melodeon Band are a group of local melodeon enthusiasts from Ness, the northernmost part of the Isle of Lewis. The group has met most Thursday evenings in their local music centre Taigh Dhonnchaidh since their formation in 2000. Traditional melodeon playing had seen a great decline over the years and so the group was formed with the aim to keep the old style alive. They started out as just an informal group meeting for a tune, cuppa and a yarn. Working with Taigh Dhonnchaidh some members began teaching melodeon to the young people of the community and there are currently nearly 20 children learning melodeon at Taigh Dhonnchaidh.

An uair a fhuair am buidheann beagan misneachd a bhith a’ cluich còmhla, thòisich iad a’ dol air àrd-ùrlar aig tachartasan carthannais anns an sgìre, agus thairis air na bliadhnaichean, tha iad air siubhal le na bucais aca gu iomadach àite, leithid Èirinn, Lunnainn, Glaschu, Obar Dheathain agus fiù ’s cho fad às ri na Hearadh!

Tha stoidhle sònraichte agus bunasach aig a’ chòmhlan, gu mòr stèidhichte air an stoidhle traidiseanta Gàidhlig.

As the group grew in confidence playing together they started to perform at local charity events and over the years have travelled with their boxes to many places including Ireland, London, Glasgow, Aberdeen and even as far as Harris!

The band have a very distinctive and authentic sound based heavily on the traditional Gaelic style.
